A field experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI) farm, Ishurdi, Pabna during 2008-2009 cropping season to study the field performance of tissue culture plants with other planting materials of sugarcane. Three varieties viz. Isd 32 (V1), Isd 35 (V2) and Isd 36 (V3), and five planting materials viz. 3-budded setts (3BS), 2-budded setts (2BS), polybag settlings (PBS), budchip settlings (BCS) and tissue culture plants (TCP) were tested. Significant differences were found among the varieties and planting materials. Variety Isd 32 showed the highest cane yield (65.07 t ha-1). Tissue culture plants produced the highest number of tillers (171.22 ×103 ha-1), millable canes (131.60 ×103 ha-1) and cane yield (73.14 t ha-1) but the lowest stalk diameter (1.59 cm). All the varieties exhibited the highest establishment in tissue culture plants. The highest number of tillers (214.83 ×103 ha-1), millable canes (152.20 ×103 ha-1), stalk length (247.20 cm) and cane yield (92.25 t ha-1) were also found in tissue culture plants of variety Isd 32. Thus, the potentiality of tissue culture plants in the field for better cane yield in comparison with conventional methods of planting setts and settlings was found in this study.

A field experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI) farm, Ishurdi, Pabna during 2008-2009 cropping season. The experiment comprised three varieties viz. Isd 32 (V1), Isd 35 (V2) and Isd 36 (V3), and five planting materials viz. 3-budded setts (3BS), 2-budded setts (2BS), polybag settlings (PBS), budchip settlings (BCS) and tissue culture plants (TCP). Three budded and two budded setts were dipped in 1% Bavistin 50 WP solution for 30 minutes before planting in the field. Three budded setts were planted in end to end method with row to row distance 100 cm and two budded double setts were planted in the trenches at the spacing of 100 cm × 50 cm. Polybag settlings were raised in polybag and budchip settlings were raised in soil bed nursery. The tissue culture plants were produced in the laboratory through micropropagation using shoot tip explants under standard procedure. Sixty days old settlings and tissue culture plants were transplanted in the main field at the spacing of 100 cm × 50 cm. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications using plot size of 5 m × 4 m.Data on establishment/germination was recorded at 45 days after planting. Tiller population produced by different treatments was counted at 120 days after planting. Number of millable canes and cane yield were recorded on the plot basis. Growth characters like stalk length, stalk diameter and quality attribute pol % cane were also recorded at harvest from randomly selected 10 stalks from each plot. All the data were statistically analyzed and the mean differences were adjusted by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

The findings established the potentiality of tissue culture plants in the field and suggest for producing quality seed cane through tissue culture in the existing varieties and also in newly released sugarcane varieties for quick adoption by the farmers.
